Unfiltered Pumpkin Ale
Harpoon’s “Unfiltered Offering” (UFO)
Boston, MA and Windsor, VT
This is one of the few unfiltered pumpkin ales available on the market, and is a fine example of both. Due to its in bottle conditioning, it is difficult for them to give us an approximate abv, as each bottle can differ by little enough. However, that does not stop this from being a great beer, one I hope you decide to give a try before the end of the season. Also, this is the third of the seven pumpkin beers being placed in Pumpkinpalooza, so look forward to the better “half” of the pumpkin beer selections.
Aroma: Very strong pumpkin and spice scent on the nose. There is little hoppy aroma, and the malts hide behind it all. There are hints of red delicious apple as well.
Appearance: Mellow orange in color. It is hazy, due to suspended yeast in the brew. It lifted a decent off-white head of big bubbles that fell quickly, leaving almost nothing of it. There is some light visible carbonation.
Flavor: Very strong pumpkin pie flavor, with a hint of yeast given banana. There is no apparent hoppy bitterness, and the malts compliment the pumpkin so well as to blend with it. Some wheaty flavors come up too, as well as the red delicious apple flavor.
Mouthfeel: Very light on the palate, with a fizziness to it that plays well with the flavors.
Overall Impression: The yeasty flavor comes out a little too strong over the pumpkin. However, the other flavors come together well to create a very refreshing pumpkin brew.
(3 weren’t labeled in the 6-pack … for shame!)
