Shipyard Brewing Co., Portland, ME
Here we are at the number 1 pumpkin beer, and the closing day of Pumkinpalooza. As I mentioned at the start, this is the one pumpkin beer that I absolutely must have whenever I can find it, and will probably grab an extra case or two just before the end of the season. This beer comes in at 4.5% abv, making it an excellent sessions beer, or a beer that can be drank all night without feeling any severe ill effects from it.
Aroma: Very strong pumpkin, spice, and fruitiness. Light hints of malts in the background, with almost no hoppy presence in the aroma.
Appearance: Pale orange to yellow in color. It shows good carbonation, and put up a pale head of medium sized bubbles that hung for a bit before falling to a thin haze over the beer.
Flavor: A lightly flavored beer, with strong pumpkin, a decent hit of spice, and a light malty background. No hop bitterness or flavor is apparent in the beer.
Mouthfeel: Very light, and very bubbly. The brew moves cleanly across the palate.
Overall Impression: This is a very straightforward pumpkin pie beer. It is also one of my favorite beers, not only at this time of year, but anytime. It is just unfortunate that it is only available these couple months.
As I said, this is the final selection for Pumpkinpalooza. Are there any pumpkin beers that you think we missed? Or others you think I need to try? Let me know what you think, and I will do my best to find some more before the season is done.
