Elysian Dragonstooth Stout

Settled in Seattle, Washington, the Elysian brewery dropped a bomb of a stout with this one, weighing in at 7.5% abv.

Aroma: Strong dark maltiness, with toasty and smokey undertones.  Some hops can be noted as well.

Appearance: Very dark to black in color.  Light carbonation, leaves a tan head that dissipates to a filmy covering.

Flavor: Very heavy burnt malt bitterness, with a great smokey flavor on the tongue.  The bitterness of the dark malts melds well with the hops.  As it warms on the tongue, hints of dark fruits and licorice begin to appear.

Mouthfeel: Very full-bodied, but not as heavy as I was expecting for an oatmeal stout.  The carbonation is strong, and works well with the heavy flavors of the brew.

Overall Impression: We both enjoyed this beer.  The smokiness makes it very nice, and the overall flavor is very very tasty.

Final Impressions:

Hops:                    mug rating 1.5

Malts:                   mug rating 4

Flavor:                  mug rating 3.5

Overall:                mug rating 4

Label:                    mug rating 5

Side note: Any label with an awesome dragon gets a “5” from us!

*Again, our apologies for the lack of posts, work has been a little hectic recently, and will only get busier through the end of the year. We will post as much as possible, and have some interesting things coming for you soon, including a tasting of the Snickers beer (already bottled), as well as some other special homebrews that have been done for fun and for interesting tries, including an IPA and a Christmas brew of my own devising!
