Magic Hat Brewing Co.
South Burlington, VT
This is one of the two seasonal brews from the Magic Hat Brewing Co. Besides being the brewery that got me into real beer, it also happens to make some rather interesting brews when the inclination hits them. This happens to be one of those interesting brews, and Saison with hints of dark fruit. Unfortunately, I don’t know the alcohol content of this beer, but it is darn tasty either way.
Aroma: Very strong maltiness, with not much hop aroma. Some dark wheat is apparent, as well as a hint of cherry. From Jess, “Smells like Sam Adams’ Cherry Wheat’s older, more mature, better traveled brother.”
Appearance: Very dark red-brown, shows like black cherry in front of a light. The head is medium tan color, that held well with large bubbles, but settled to a nice rocky head, finally falling to a heavy foam. The brew shows medium carbonation overall.
Flavor: Dark malts and smoky flavor dominate the palate. The cherries hang on for the aftertaste. There isn’t much in the way6 of hops, but the saison yeast flavor comes through very well.
Mouthfeel: surprisingly light on the palate, with a decently heavy carbonation.
Overall Impression: This brew is very tasty. The flavors meld very well, and we both really like it. We also hope it will return next year. Even though I am not pairing this brew, I would definitely have it with just about any strong flavored game meats, especially venison sausage in a heavy white gravy over biscuits.
